About the Book
Mrs. Homeschool
"I sometimes wonder where I was when I changed my mind."
Ainslee’s husband once said, “Physical change is not necessary for spiritual growth, but it’s almost always the impetus for growth.” With that mindset, when a job offer prompts Lyndon and Ainslee to move across the Prairie Provinces; they look forward with a renewed sense of hope. It doesn’t take Ainslee long, though, to be conflicted with the realization that what she defines as significance will be challenged on every level by Lyndon’s recent commitment to homeschooling. "Was homeschooling what God wanted for me? For us? Could I submit myself to God if it was? Could I fight Lyndon if it wasn’t?" Pressures mount from every side. When Ainslee comes to terms with what it means for her to use homeschooling as a good means to impact her sons’ lives, she finds that systems are incapable of accomplishing the transformation they all need most. Discussion questions included make Mrs. Homeschool an excellent choice for a Book Club study. |

recent thoughts...
It’s been just over six months since my book shipment arrived. Like in my novel, a semi-truck arrived on our country yard (and actually managed to turn around!), leaving me a pallet of books.
Thank you to each reader! Your feedback is always appreciated. I also hope that as your friends read, Ainslee’s story will inspire conversation as you discuss your own convictions and the perceptions you may have been holding about homeschooling.
Mrs. Homeschool was a story idea that brewed and simmered for about 10 years before I started being intentional in its writing. Now more than ever, I would encourage parents to consider the privilege of homeschooling. I don’t think my novel portrays accurately enough the joy of spending time with our children, watching them learn, or delighting in discovering their personalities and abilities. It certainly does not portray well enough the murky water
that is our public school system.
However, I hope it does point to the truth that homeschooling has a limitation: it cannot save our children’s souls. This is not a unique story in that all of Christianity is one song, is one story and it’s this: mankind is hopeless sinner; Jesus is the only Saviour. Jesus, only Jesus can bring true life to our children. I am convinced that, when possible, mentoring and educating our children with our presence is a great means for them to come to salvation, but the devil would have us believe it’s a formula, that their salvation is our self-righteous reward. As with everything we do for the Lord, if God leads us to homeschooling we must do it obediently in faith entrusting the results to Him. “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Hebrews 11:6
I received the following message from Shae:
“I finished Mrs. Homeschool today and wanted to tell you how much I loved it! I cried and chuckled and had more ‘I get that’ moments than I’ve ever had reading a novel before…The secondary characters were so well written I could identify with them just as much as Ainslee…Thank you so much for writing this story. It touched me very deeply.”

About the author
Karen Louise Peters
Karen Peters homeschooled her children for well over a decade. Their education also included public school and Christian school in Western Canada. Living in a variety of homes and communities through Saskatchewan and Alberta, plus a summer in the Yukon, has introduced Karen to various perspectives. Trained at Nipawin Bible College, Karen has written for Tribal Trails, including the continuation of the Eagle Feather Mystery Series begun by Bernard Palmer (popular in Christian circles for his youth mystery fiction in the 1950's-80's).
At present, Karen lives on the bald prairies where the elevation varies by inches, and a train chugs past the wheat fields once or twice a day. There, fox kits play on the gravel road, Canada geese make music in the fall, frogs sing in spring, and the occasional moose ambles by. She has grown, married children and a granddaughter. Karen and her husband work in the housing industry, renovating and redeeming worn out houses—though she has personally never yet done electrical. |
